Visiting a church for the first time can be a daunting experience. At St. Barnabas, we’ve tried anticipating some questions to ensure that you are comfortable when you do visit.
What time are services on Sunday morning?
At 8:00 a.m. there’s a traditional worship service of Holy Eucharist in the Chapel (no music). The language is more formal (i.e.; “thee”, “thy”). We hear scripture read, we recite psalms together, and we pray. There is always a sermon. Rite I is used at this service.
At 10:00 a.m., the main service of Holy Eucharist takes place in the church. The choir and congregation sing, accompanied by wonderful organ music. Children from the Sunday School join the service before we take communion. We listen to scripture, sing, pray, and hear a sermon. Rite II is used at at this service.
During the months of July and August, there is one service in the church at 9:00 a.m. The congregation sings, accompanied by the organ. Rite II is used at this service.
How long do services last?
The 8:00 a.m. lasts about 45 minutes, while the 10:00 a.m. service runs about an hour.
What about communion?
Holy Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday at every service and all- of any age – who are baptized in any denomination are welcome to receive the bread and wine. Those who would prefer a blessing are encouraged also to come forward to the altar rail and receive a prayer from the priest.
What about communion for my child?
Baptized children of any age are encouraged to receive the bread and the wine, should they desire. Receiving the bread alone is sufficient for the spiritual benefit, should you prefer they not take the wine.
Where can I park?
The church is located at 11 North Broadway, just north of Main Street in Irvington. We have a parking lot, some spaces in the rectory driveway, and there is also parking along Broadway on Sunday mornings. Main Street itself, and the Main Street School may also provide overflow options.
Do you offer programs for children?
Childcare by supervised young people is offered for children 3 years old and under and is available from 9:30 a.m. in the Nursery. Programs for children start at 9:45 a.m. in the Sunday School Wing.
Sunday School takes place from 9:45 a.m. every Sunday from September through June. Registration begins in the fall, but your child may join in any time. If you would like to learn more about the curriculum and the teachers, please call the office and asked to be contacted by the Sunday School Director.
Rhythms of Grace
This monthly worship service offers a warm and welcoming environment for children and families with special needs. We hear a story, make things, sing, pray and share an easy-going communion service.
What should I wear?
There’s no dress code. Some people do enjoy wearing their “Sunday Best”, but whatever feels comfortable and appropriate for you is fine. Kids regularly come in soccer uniforms if they have a practice immediately after church.
Who can I ask if I have questions?
We have a group of people at the door before the service (Ushers), and there are others to welcome everyone after the service (Greeters). These people are the first points of contact for anyone just coming in, and they are eager to be welcoming and helpful. And, of course, you may speak with one of the clergy, too.
