What to expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be a daunting experience. At St. Barnabas, we’ve tried anticipating some questions to ensure that you are comfortable when you do visit.

What time are services on Sunday morning?

During the program year, September through mid-June, there is an 8:00 a.m. that is very a traditional service of Holy Eucharist in the Chapel (no music). The language is more formal (i.e.; “thee”, “thy”). We hear scripture read, we recite psalms together, and we pray. There is always a sermon. Rite I is used at this service.

At 10:00 a.m., the main service of Holy Eucharist takes place in the main sanctuary. The choir and congregation sing, accompanied by wonderful organ music. Children from the Sunday School join the service before we take communion. We listen to scripture, sing, pray, and hear a sermon. Rite II is used at at this service.

After St. Barnabas Day (our Patronal Festival), in June until Labour Day is one service held at 9:00 a.m. Rite II is used at this service.

How long do services last?

All Services run between 45 minutes (the early service) and an hour and ten minutes.

What about communion?

Holy Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday at every service and all- of any age – who are baptized in any denomination are welcome to receive the bread and wine. Those who would prefer a blessing are encouraged also to come forward to the altar rail and receive a prayer from the priest.

What about communion for my child?

Baptized children of any age are encouraged to receive the bread and the wine, should they desire. Receiving the bread alone is sufficient for the spiritual benefit, should you prefer they not take the wine.

Where can I park?

The church is located at 11 North Broadway, just north of Main Street in Irvington. We have a parking lot, spaces in the rectory driveway, and along Broadway in front on the church, on Sunday mornings. Main Street itself, and the Main Street School provide overflow options on very big occasions.

Do you offer programs for children?

During the school year childcare is provided for children 3 years old and under and is available from 9:30 a.m. in the Nursery. The “Godly Play” formation program for children starts at 9:45 a.m. in the Sunday School Wing (entrance via the Parish Hall).

Sunday School takes place from 9:45 a.m. every Sunday from September through June. Registration begins in the fall, but your child may join at any time. If you would like to learn more about the Godly Play curriculum click here.

What should I wear?

There’s no dress code, as such. Kids regularly come in team uniforms if they have a game immediately after church. Many families leave immediately after communion if need be.

Who can I ask if I have questions?

You will be greeted at the door by an Usher, and welcomed by a Greeter, both of whom can answer your questions. They are the first points of contact for everyone and help set a friendly and welcoming tone. And, of course, you may speak with our rector, Gareth Evans after church.
