| Children & Youth |
We believe that all Christians are called to grow in faith and understanding and that the spiritual journey is never-ending. Children comprise almost a third of our congregation and their spiritual perspectives, as well as their questions, are taken seriously. Our teachers are eager to provide our children and youth with the best tools to grow in their love of God and neighbor. Nursery Nursery care is provided for infants and toddlers during the 10:00 a.m. service. Our sound system carries the service into the Lounge area (just outside the back door of the church, near the nursery) in case you need to temporarily leave the church to comfort a crying child or prefer to nurse your baby there. Sunday School Class One is for younger children (beginning at age 3) and is designed for kids who are getting used to being in a classroom setting. Class Two is for children in early elementary school and uses multi-sensory materials are used to help in telling the Bible story of the day. Class Three is for older elementary school students and Class Four is geared to children in middle school. Both classes use the Episcopal Children's Curriculum, and go deeper into topics such as the Bible, the Sacraments, and the life of the Church. Sunday School ends in time for the children to join worship in the church and celebrate Holy Eucharist with their families. Pilgrims’ Choir Directed by Sandy Summer-Parks, our Children's Choir (Kindergarten through 6th Grades) rehearses every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in Colwell Hall and sings during some Sunday services, as well as performing at special events like the Christmas Pageant and our celebration of St. Barnabas Day. The Youth Group is for young people in grades 8-12. All youth play an active role in the life of the church. The Youth Group meets once a month after the 10:00 a.m. service. Over snacks, we discuss everything from world hunger to what's going on in our own lives. About once a month we also go on an adventure or engage in a service project. Adventures have included paintball, kayaking, and a Christmas party at the Rectory. Members of the youth group are also an integral part of many of St. Barnabas’s ministries, including acolyting, offering childcare in the Nursery, caring for our building, running our sound system, helping lead parish-events like making Jesse Tree ornaments and the Children’s Outreach Projects, and playing roles in the Christmas Eve pageant and St. Barnabas Day. It is clear that the members of the youth group have found in this parish their spiritual home. Children's Outreach Projects We offer several opportunities throughout the year for kids to take part in sharing God’s love with others. We send care packages to our parishioners away at college, bring Christmas cookies and carols to homebound seniors, and make Easter baskets donation for needy children.
