| Who We Are |
The Church of St. Barnabas is a Christian community that seeks to serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves. We affirm baptism as the only criterion for membership and full participation in the life of the church. A welcome to participation is extended without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, education, or political opinion. This is a hallmark of our identity and one we work hard to preserve. St. Barnabas is a lively place, full of families, children and single adults in all walks of life. There is a place for you here. A Bit of Background The Church of St. Barnabas is an Episcopal Church within the Diocese of New York. We are part of the Anglican Communion of churches throughout the world. Our denomination is the colonial offshoot of the Church of England. After the American Revolution the newly independent states removed themselves and their church from the oversight of the King of England and English bishops. The word “Episcopal” describes the way our churches are organized around the ministry of local bishops, priests and deacons. Our local (or “diocesan”) bishop is Right Reverend Mark S. Sisk. Our parish priests are The Rev. Nora Smith (Rector) and The Rev. Lindsay Lunnum (Assistant Rector). Worship in the Episcopal Church is taken most often from The Book of Common Prayer. The Prayer Book was initially crafted in the 16th century to preserve a form of worship while allowing room for individual conscience and doctrinal tolerance. The BCP, as we call it, has been modified and modernized, but it still conforms to the original intent. What we call “Rite I” worship preserves the older language most closely. We most often use this rite in our early service on Sundays. “Rite II” has been our principal order of worship since the 1980’s and is what we use most often. And, we sing! Along with our Book of Common Prayer, we use a Hymnal of beautiful songs, both ancient and modern, to enhance our worship experience. Mr. Donald Butt directs our Canterbury Choir and leads the music of our worship on our magnificent pipe organ. Welcome! We hope you will consider visiting us soon so that we may welcome you personally.
